Home-Based Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Studies show that home-based pulmonary rehabilitation is an idea whose time has come!

Happy Senior with DumbbellsChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation leading to reduced ventilatory capacity and is associated with shortness of breath. Patients with severe airflow limitation and those who experience repeated acute exacerbations are at greater risk of mortality, re-hospitalization, impaired quality of life, and reduced exercise capacity.

Interventions designed to hasten recovery and improve symptoms after hospitalization may lead to real improvements in quality of life and functional ability in patients with COPD, as well as other lung disorders.  Several studies now support the efficacy of one-on-one pulmonary rehabilitation in the patient’s home.  These studies show outcomes similar to those achieved by patients in traditional group settings.*

Select Respiratory Services offers home-based pulmonary rehabilitation for patients who may not be candidates for the traditional group setting.  Candidates include wheelchair-bound patients, those who are unable to exercise with traditional equipment such as cycles and treadmills, patients who cannot access a group pulmonary rehabilitation program due to distance or transportation issues, and those who would benefit from one-on-one coaching by a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Specialist.
